BETHEL — The police department has earned its re-accreditation from a top law enforcement agency, making it one of only a few in Fairfield County to do so.
The department achieved its second Law Enforcement Accreditation Award from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies.
The commission is considered the “gold standard in public safety,” according to its website.
Bethel is one of three police agencies in Fairfield County with this accreditation, with 19 municipal departments in the state achieving this honor.
“We are proud to serve the community with a high degree of excellence and look forward to maintaining that excellence through continued accreditation and partnership with CALEA,” the department said.
The accreditation Bethel earned focuses on best practices related to life, health and safety procedures, according to the commission’s website.
Benefits of the award include increased community advocacy, strong support from government officials, better defense against civil suits, reduced risk and liability exposure, and greater accountability, police said.
“Accreditation embodies the precepts of community-oriented policing,” the commission states. “It creates a forum in which law enforcement agencies and citizens work together to prevent and control challenges confronting law enforcement and provides clear direction about community expectations.”
The department last earned this accreditation in 2015 and can voluntarily work toward achieving it every four years.
Lt. Heather Burnes led the department’s effort to receive the award.
Assessors visited the station in June to determine if the department met the best standards for public safety.
The public was also invited to speak to the assessors.
Capt. Stephen Pugner and Lt. Michael Libertini went to Covington, Ky. in November to appear before the commission for the re-accreditation.
