D214 students earn top spots in state cybersecurity competition - Journal & Topics Newspapers Online

Two student cybersecurity competition teams from Township High School Dist. 214 are among the nation’s top 100 teams.

In cybersecurity competitions, students use their skills at protecting computer network systems against vulnerabilities and a possible attack. They are tasked with identifying system vulnerabilities while maintaining critical services for six hours.

Dist. 214 teams earned 1st and 2nd place in state finals on Dec. 6; however, it’s not over yet. Both teams will get back to work in the new year, giving them both a chance to qualify for the national competition.

The first-place team consists of Wheeling High School students Kevin Patino, Eleanor Sherrett and David Nesterenko and John Hersey High School students Andrew Dickey and Joseph Szubski and Nick Newman. Coached by computer instructor Tom Polak the team took first place honors in the Platinum Tier, the highest level of competition.

The second-place team consists of Rolling Meadows students Minh Duong, Anita Konopka, Rebecca Phillips, Kamil Podgorski, Robert Voss and Audrey Wheeler with coach and CTE teacher Mike Drenth.

Cyber Security competitions have become a popular and important stage for high school students because it gives them a chance to see their future in a potential career along with learning how to find and apply solutions to a threat that could potentially affect anyone relying on digital information, which in 2019, is almost everyone.

Initiated by the Air Force Association, the CyberPatriot National Youth Cyber Education Program was created to “excite, educate and motivate students toward careers in cyber security and other science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines critical to the nation’s future” according to Dist. 214.

Dist. 214 schools include Buffalo Grove, Elk Grove, Hersey, Prospect, Rolling Meadows, Wheeling and the district’s facilities at Forest View in Arlington Heights.
