The biggest surprise in Tennessee's crop of newcomers said there's no mystery to the reason he's earning minutes as a true freshman on a ranked team.
Davonte Gaines said he just plays hard and tries to do exactly what his coaches ask him to do.
That combination of traits has allowed "Ticket" Gaines to play 15, 13 and 20 minutes in the 21st-ranked Vols' past three games.
Gaines had a solid all-around performance in Tennessee's blowout win over Florida A&M on Wednesday night at Thompson-Boling arena, finishing with seven points, four rebounds, two assists, two steals and one blocked shot in 20 minutes off the bench.
A long, lean 6-foot-7 southpaw with a 7-foot-3 wingspan, the Buffalo-born Gaines was never touted as a mega prospect, but Tennessee identified him very early in the recruiting process, was thrilled to get his commitment and never wavered from him, despite a number of five-star and high-four-star prospects surging into the picture as the Vols reestablished themselves as a national power.
Gaines and the Vols will now take a break (from games) to focus on fall semester final exams, and they'll be back in action Dec. 14 with a huge home game against fierce in-state rival Memphis in Knoxville.
