Jared Moe's shutout enables Gophers to earn series split at Michigan State - Minneapolis Star Tribune

– Jared Moe carried over his strong play in relief Friday night into a shutout Saturday.

Moe stopped all 28 shots he faced for his first college shutout, making Scott Reedy's early goal stand up before an empty-netter late as the Gophers beat No. 20 Michigan State 2-0 on Saturday night at Munn Ice Arena, earning a split in the Big Ten men's hockey series.

It's the first Gophers shutout since Eric Schierhorn made 12 saves to defeat St. Lawrence 3-0 on Nov. 17, 2018.

"We responded tonight, and that's what we needed to do," Gophers coach Bob Motzko said. "[Michigan State] is a good hockey team. … I really like that team. We stuck our nose into battles — we won a lot of them, and when we didn't win them, we didn't lose many."

Moe played the final two periods Friday night, stopping 14 of 15 shots in relief of Jack LaFontaine, who gave up three goals in a 4-1 loss to the Spartans.

Reedy scored his fourth goal in as many games, taking a long pass from Ben Brinkman and beating John Lethemon on a wrist shot only 1 minute, 40 seconds in. Reedy leads the Gophers with 10 goals this season.

That was the only goal for almost the duration of the game. That was even though Michigan State had 61 seconds of 5-on-3 power play late in the second period; the Gophers killed it off.

The third period was Moe's least busy, as he needed to make only six saves. Ben Meyers scored nearly the length of the ice into an empty net with 68 seconds remaining, not long after the Spartans pulled Lethemon, who finished with 20 saves.
